Indoor Microclimate Measurements, Heatwave Meteorological Data, and Thermal Modelling of a Dairy Cattle Building
This dataset supports an assessment of indoor heat stress—measured using the Temperature-Humidity Index (THI)—in the cubicle yards and milking parlour at the University of Reading’s Hall Farm dairy facility (51.41° N, 0.91° W) in Shinfield, UK. The Excel file (‘Indoor microclimate measurements and simulation dataset.xlsx’) contains both measured and simulated hourly air temperature (°C) and relative humidity (%) data for the 2021 UK heatwave (16–23 July).
Simulated indoor conditions were generated using EnergyPlus (version 22.1) and validated against the measured data to verify the accuracy of the thermal model developed for the dairy building.
The dataset includes the following EnergyPlus model files, representing both a base case and several adaptation scenarios:
File name | Description |
1) M_Base_0VD.idf 2) B_S1.idf 3) B_S2.idf 4) B_S3.idf 5) B_S3_S2.idf 6) B_S4.idf | Basic model for validation Scenario 1: Solar refelcting paint over the roofs Scenario 2: Increased natural ventilation Scenario 3: Mechanical ventilation Scenario 3+2: Hybrid ventilation (mechanical + increased natural ventilation) Scenario 4: All of the cooling strategies |
Weather files used in the simulations, including both observed and projected heatwave conditions, are as follows:
File name | Description |
1) GBR_Reading_Z.epw 2) EEW_4800170_1970s_R20.epw 3) EEW_4800170_2080s_R20.epw | Includes the observed UK 2021 heatwave period Includes the 1970s heatwave period Includes the 2080s heatwave period |
